A health professional should be consulted in cases of more severe depression.
How does St John's Wort work?
St Johnís Wort is a natural anti-depressant. This anti-depressant effect is most likely due to inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO), although some research suggests that it may be due to increased light-sensitivity.
Are there any side effects?
St Johnís Wort can cause over-sensitivity to light in some individuals. You should not take St John's Wort if you are taking any medications for depression or other psychiatric disorders, as it can interfere with these medications. Do not take St John's Wort if you are taking the oral contraceptive pill. Consult your doctor for further advice if you are in any doubt.
